Haute-Savoie: between lakes and mountains

July, 2022

This time, we’re plunging into the Savoyard wilderness with Emmanuel, the teacher, and Romain, the student. For this edition, they’ll have the chance to discover a department that combines sport and nature: Haute-Savoie! It’s off to the summits for this adventure.

The two pairs set off from Chambéry on the morning of Friday July 1 at 8am and returned on the evening of July 2, hitchhiking only.

Our cultural challenges to discover Haute-Savoie

  • [L'yvoire] Want to awaken your five senses? Visit this magnificent piece of living art.

The Garden of the 5 senses in Yvoire. https://www.jardin5sens.net/

  • [Holy Claire] It's in the land of trout that you'll have to track down the ancestor of the French Academy.

The ‘Académie florimontane’, ancestor of the French Academy, formerly the Société florimontane, is a scholar society founded in 1606-1607 in Annecy. The aim of this scholar society was to encourage theological, philosophical, scientific and literary activities, by bringing academicians together in the Hôtel Bagnoréa on Sainte-Claire street in Annecy.

  • [Abyss] Straddling the Chéran river at 96 m, this is the starting point for numerous hikes.

The Pont de l’Abîme is a suspension bridge in the Haute-Savoie department. The bridge enables a direct link between the communes of Cusy and Gruffy, to cross the Chéran at its exit from the Cluse de Bange at a height (air draught) of 96 meters.

  • [La devémy] At the end of the sculptures is an unusual building, where religion and modern art have found common ground.

The church of Notre-Dame de Toute Grâce, founded by Canon Devémy, owes its reputation to the many renowned artists who contributed to its decoration. Although they were of different religions, opinions and styles, they all left behind a unique body of work.

  • [La cachat] This miraculous spring cured artistocrat Jean Charles de Laizer of his urinary calculi.

    The Cachat source in Evian-les-bains.

  • [La ripaille] This building is 3000 years old, yes 3000 years old! It's a magnificent place, on the shores of Lake Geneva, known for its history, its nature and its wine.

Le castle of Ripaille, Domaine de Ripaille, in Thonon-les-Bains.

  • [Tower] The Counts of Geneva built their castle here... and all that remains is this tower!

The Tower of the Counts of Geneva. La Roche-sur-Foron.

  • [The fountain] As the center of the historic Albanais region, this town has many remarkable fountains! Find at least 4 of them.

There are 4 fountains to find in Rumilly.

  • [The lagoon] This day is sublimated by its lakes... Find as many as you can.

Here are just a few of the many lakes in Haute-Savoie:

    • lac d’Annecy
    • lac Léman
    • lac de la Balme-de-Sillingy
    • lacs aux dames
    • lac de Gers
    • lac de roy
    • lac bleu
    • lac d’Anterne
    • and so many others
  • [La sommeiller] He helped build the Mont-Cenis tunnel, the first major mountain tunnel. One of his statues is in his village, find it there!

In Saint-Jeoire, there’s the monument to Germain Sommeiller.

  • [La Bianco] He almost always has his head in the clouds, but never goes anywhere without his Goûter. Take a picture of him!
