Hitchhiking through Mayenne, penniless, with our bosses

Portraits 2 Passages takes you to Mayenne — the department, the town and the river!

On the programme: two 100% unlikely duos — Nicolas & Jean-François (his boss) and Diane & Gwenola (her manager) — taking on challenges cooked up by Lou. Will they still be getting along at work once the adventure is over?

The route map

Words and pictures tell the emotion, but geography tells the effort. To see the full scale of the journey and its detours, explore the exact route they took and where each challenge was located.

Good to know: you can interact with the map to show or hide the challenges and routes. Hide the list of challenges if you want to try them yourself!

The challenges

Can you take on these cultural challenges like they did? Test your knowledge of the region with the riddles below.

The Alpine — Head to the highest point of the Armorican Massif to see a mural. Can you find out which artist painted it? Ask around!

Mont des Avaloirs, at 416 m. The artist is Seb Toussaint.

The Simple — William II besieged me and ended up setting me on fire. Barons later put me back on my feet, but I no longer welcomed kings — I was more the type to welcome prisoners.

Château de Mayenne (Mayenne).

The Émigrée — My life was complicated: caught up in the Vendée wars, I was denounced and guillotined on 5 March 1794. Today my grave lies in the middle of the fields — good luck finding me!

Tombe de l'Émigrée (Lassay-les-Châteaux).

The Natural — I am a unique natural site in Mayenne, known for my impressive rock formations and my legends.

Grottes de Saulges (the Saulges caves).

The Ganne — I stand right next to Suzanne, but between you and me, passers-by only have eyes for me.

Tertre Ganne (Sainte-Suzanne).

The Romanesque — I was built in 1096 in Haut-Anjou. I saw canons regular walk through my naves, and part of me collapsed in 1795. But which part?

Abbaye de la Roë (La Roë).

The Upside-Down One — For twenty years, my creator has filled me with dreams and colours.

Palais Robert-Tatin, or Robert Tatin Museum (Cossé-le-Vivien).

The Buttavent — I was born thanks to textiles during the 19th century. Find someone who can tell you the history of this place!

Toiles de Mayenne (Fontaine-Daniel).

The Perrine — I am a haven of peace and greenery, perched above the calm waters of the Mayenne. I used to be a private garden, but today I stretch over 4.5 hectares for everyone to enjoy. I also keep the memory of two famous children of this land: a painter and a sailor.

Jardin de la Perrine (Laval).

The Whistle — Which town does this coat of arms belong to? What does it represent? And what is the story behind these symbols? Go to the town in question to answer these questions.

Ernée. The story behind these whistles (or “subious”) is uncertain. One version goes like this: the townspeople hid when the English invaded, and when three whistle blasts rang out, they burst out of their hiding places and chased away the surprised English.

The Merici — I am a place where religion and art meet. My theatre can seat up to 500 people! Visit my gardens to enjoy the serenity of the place.

Couvent des Ursulines (Château-Gontier).

The Pontpied — The Virgin appeared here on 17 January 1871. Since then, I have been a Marian town.

Pontmain.
